Child abuse seminar - weaving together the way forward
Presbyterian Support Northern, together with the Office of the Children’s Commissioner, is delivering a seminar on child abuse to look at the issue from a personal, policy and practice perspective.
The seminar is being held in recognition of the World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse and is a registered event of this international day.
The seminar is being held in Auckland on Wednesday 19th November from 9am to 12 noon at the Jubilee Rooms in Parnell.
Attendees will hear from a victim’s perspective the story of Jude Simpson, Presbyterian Support Northern’s Family Violence Prevention Advocate. Jude suffered abuse as a child and went on to live in violent and abusive relationships. Later in life, Jude sought help and is now a living example that the cycle of violence can be broken.
David Kenkel from the Office of the Children’s Commissioner will supplement this with information from research and social service practice experience. He’ll look at the trajectory of abuse in children; the links between a child who witnesses or suffers abuse who then goes on to live a life of violence. He’ll address how these learnings should inform our policies, services and practice.
The seminar is for community social service organisations, government, practitioners, policy makers and researchers, and aims to assist all who are working with child abuse to learn more about working toward the elimination of child abuse.
Presbyterian Support Northern is a community based organisation whose services include social work, counselling, family work, group work, budgeting and money management assistance, home based support and day programmes.
