Abingdon: location, gardens and friendship

Whanganui retiree Angela Capes can easily describe what she loves most about Enliven’s Abingdon Village using three words; location, gardens and friendship.

Angela looked into many retirement living options during her search for the perfect villa; something peaceful yet close to town.

“I had spent a lot of energy trying to find the right place, then there was an open day at Abingdon and I went along. I quickly felt sure I was making the right decision to come here. The location, gardens and friendship – everything about Abingdon I like.”

But the move wasn’t a smooth one. Angela was happy with her villa and had only lived in it for two weeks when a fall left her needing hospital and then convalescent care.

“I tripped coming out of the lift at the hospital and broke my knee cap. I spent some time in hospital before moving to Kowhainui Home for six weeks to recover.”

The experience at Enliven’s Kowhainui Home, Abingdon’s sister site, confirmed she was making the right decision in moving to Abingdon. Now Angela feels safe knowing Kowhainui Home can accommodate her if she needs it.

“The staff at Kowhainui Home are beautiful people. They helped me to get my independence back and get mobile again.”

Angela says help is always on hand at Abingdon Village too.

“Help is always here. The staff are brilliant. It’s so good to have them come and see how we are.”

As well as finding a safe and peaceful retreat at Abingdon Village, Angela found friendship.

“It’s a very special community here. We have a lot to do with each other and it’s nice because we’re all like-minded. People want to know how you’re doing and they are very welcoming.”
