Abingdon – a way of life

Whanganui retiree Ted Downing can’t speak more highly of his St John’s Hill home.

Nestled between native trees and picturesque gardens, on the land of a large country house, Ted’s home could easily be mistaken for a country cottage in a quaint English hamlet, rather than a retirement villa in Enliven’s Abingdon Village.
Ted explains that he fell in love with the Abingdon Retirement Village at first sight.

“After living in Wellington for thirty five years, I decided that it was time to move back up north to warmer climes,’ explains Ted. ‘I took a look around Abingdon Retirement Village and fell in love with its old world charm. It’s like stepping into a small English village!”

Ted, who has been living in his Abingdon retirement villa for two years, says that he was instantly taken with the ambiance of the village and the central historic house which was designed by famous Kiwi architect Chapman Taylor.

“We use the house as our village community centre,” explains Ted. “We’re lucky to have such a gorgeous building to socialise in. Most of us use the centre every day, and lots of people have a hot meal there at lunch time. I go every Sunday for a melt-in-your mouth roast dinner!”
Ted explains that one of the great things about living at Abingdon is having Suzanne, the Village Coordinator living on site.

“Suzanne is a real gem – she organises all of the community events, looks out for us all, and goes out of her way to make sure that we are all ok. We know her so well that she’s more like family.”

Ted believes that Abingdon Retirement Village offers the best of both worlds. “I have my own country cottage style home that is just the right size for me and I have decorated just how I want it,” says Ted. “I have my own life, but also the security of knowing that someone is looking out for me if I need it.”

“Moving to Abingdon was a new start for me, and it really is a fantastic way of life. There are a lot of reasons for moving here and there are a lot of reasons to stay. It’s a great place to live!”

For your chance to fall in love with Abingdon at first sight, visit the retirement village on an Open Day held the fourth Sunday of each month. Call the Village sales agent, John Bell, on 06 349 1494 to find out more.
