Kowhainui Home resident Val Wallace wanted Christmas to arrive early at Kowhainui Home, so she set out to make it happen.

Val, who has lived at Kowhainui Home for four years, recently held a special Christmas celebration for the hospital residents and staff at the home.

“One day I came up with the idea to plan an early Christmas party, so I told the staff what I wanted to do and they got stuck in helping me straight away,” Val explains.

“We ran a raffle and raised $500 so we could buy presents for everyone, Father Christmas came along, staff prepared all the food, we sang Christmas carols together and it was marvelous.”

Val says the Christmas party was enjoyed by all.

“Everybody said to me that it was so good they couldn’t wait for the next one, so I might plan a party for Easter,” says Val.

“They’re a great crowd here and we have a lot of fun.”

Kowhainui Home diversional therapist and co-party planner Brenda Skinner says the festivities went off without a hitch.

“The event was fabulous and everything happened the way Val planned it to.”

Brenda says encouraging residents to be involved with facilitating events and activities is part of Kowhainui Home’s model of care, the Eden Alternative.

“Residents have a say in everything here and they know very well that this is their home. Whenever we’re planning something they’re the first to know and have their say,” Brenda explains.

“This puts the power in the hands of our elders. We work where they live, not the other way round. That’s part of what makes our home so different and we’re very proud of it.”

The Eden Alternative is a unique model of care used by all Enliven homes to provide much more than healthcare alone, Brenda explains.

“It’s more to do with giving elders independence and empowerment to do as much as they can do for themselves. We don’t want our residents to ever feel bored, helpless or lonely. We put the decision-making in their hands as to what they want to do – then we make it happen for them.”

Kowhainui Home is operated by Enliven, part of the not-for-profit organisation, and specialises in rest home and hospital care from its location at 88 Virginia Road in Whanganui.
