Choosing the perfect rest home can be difficult. For people who have to make a quick decision it’s even harder to find the right fit.
Sometimes the home you choose isn’t the right one. This was the case for local retiree Patricia Madsen, who didn’t feel her first rest home was the right fit for her, so she decided to make a change.
“I lived at another rest home for two and a half years but there was something about it that I didn’t quite like.”
That’s when she found Enliven’s Kandahar Home in Lansdowne, Masterton, where she says she couldn’t be happier.
“I had a friend who lived there and then moved to Kandahar and really liked it, so I decided to move here too,” Patricia explains.
“I jumped at the chance to come here and I’m very happy I chose Kandahar.”
Patricia says she has been a lot happier since making the move in March this year.
“I like it here I really do. There are things to look forward to,” says Patricia.
“I have my independence here. I have a big room, I go on outings, I can go to the RSA if I want to. I fit in with everybody and we all get along. I’m treated like a person, not a patient.”
She says she never gets bored at Kandahar Home.
“I enjoy the recreation here, there’s always something to do. I love music and I enjoy the entertainers that come in.”
For anyone looking at residential care options, Patricia says to pay Kandahar a visit.
“It’s a nice place and I would definitely recommend it. I’m pleased that I moved in here.”
Masterton’s Kandahar Home and sister-site Kandahar Court are operated by Enliven, part of the not-for-profit organisation Presbyterian Support Central, and offer rest home, hospital and dementia care, as well as short term respite, health recovery care and day programmes.
