As part of National Volunteer Awareness Week avid Masterton volunteer Sandy Morgan is taking the opportunity to encourage more people to volunteer at Enliven’s rest homes, Kandahar Home and Kandahar Court.

Sandy started volunteering at Kandahar Home in Masterton after a car accident and says volunteering has provided her with opportunities to make friends, give back, have fun and get out of the house.

“I was off work because of the accident and I needed to get out of the house and do something. Kandahar was looking for volunteers so I called them and I’ve been volunteering here ever since,” says Sandy.

Thirteen years later Sandy still visits the home twice a week to help out with activities and spend time with the residents.

“I help pamper the residents by doing their nails and I help with activities and social events at the home. It’s the personal touch that they enjoy and it’s the little things you can do to help make people feel special.”

For Sandy, the friendships and the satisfaction she feels from volunteering keeps her coming back for more.

“I need the place as much as it needs me. It gets me out and about, you meet some lovely people and you get back what you give.”

Kandahar Home and sister-site Kandahar Court are always looking for volunteers and Sandy says people shouldn’t hesitate to put their hands up.

“I definitely recommend volunteering at Kandahar because you feel like you’re giving back,” Sandy explains.

“If people have a bit of time and they want to make somebody’s life a little better they can definitely do that here.”

Kandahar manager Mike Keyworth says volunteers of all ages are most welcome.

“We’d love to have more people to help us out with activities such as arts and crafts and gardening, at social events, providing entertainment, driving the home’s van and assisting on outings, or simply visiting to chat with the residents.”

Kandahar Home is located at 8 Roberts Road in Lansdowne, Masterton, and provides rest home, hospital, respite and health recovery care as well as a day programme. Kandahar Court, located at 2 Colombo Road in Lansdowne, provides specialised dementia care, respite and a day programme.
