Giving Tai Chi a go

World Tai Chi Day on Saturday saw people from across the globe celebrate the ancient art. Events took place across Wellington, with tai chi demonstrations and information sessions running in various locations.

But for Wellingtonians who missed out, Enliven is welcoming everyone in the local community to come along to their weekly classes held every Tuesday from 11am-12pm at Island Bay Community Centre. The classes are tailored for those over 65 or who are looking for gentle exercise.

Island Bay local, Ray Clegg has been attending Enliven’s weekly tai chi class for the last three years, and at the age of 84, he says he wouldn’t be here without it!

“I’ve had a few health problems recently, and have been in and out of hospital a few times. My doctor told me that the sooner I got back to my Tai Chi class the better. He said there is nothing that he can do for me medically that Tai Chi can’t!” says Ray.

“Tai Chi keeps me moving, gives me some gentle exercise and works wonders for my balance – The best thing is that it’s so low-impact, so it’s great exercise but it doesn’t wear you out”

“After four classes I could feel the positive change in myself both physically and mentally, and since then I’ve never looked back. I’d urge everyone to give Tai Chi a go; it’s really worth it!”

Enliven Community Support has been offering tai chi classes especially for older people in Wellington for seven years as part of their Positive Ageing Services. Classes are available across the Wellington region and cost just $5 per class.

For more information about Tai Chi, call Enliven on (04) 439 4967, or just turn up on the day to join the class.
