We believe everybody
deserves to enjoy life,
whatever their age
When 58 year old Paul Gerretzen had a motorbike accident in 1975 he suffered severe head injuries and his life was changed forever. Now, Paul lives in a specially designed, wheelchair friendly home in Palmerston North and is supported daily by Enliven’s Community Support services.
“I was 19 when I came off my bike,” explains Paul. “I was injured really badly so I couldn’t work anymore and I needed a walking stick. My Dad encouraged me to continue with my plans to move out of home and get my own place. It was the best thing that he ever did for me and I’m glad that I have my own independence.”
Paul explains that things took a turn for the worse when he suffered a stroke which left him in a wheel chair. “After my stroke I needed help with most things in life, so Enliven started coming to give me a hand.”
Anne, an Enliven Community Support Worker visits Paul every day to help him with showering, dressing, cooking, cleaning and shopping.
“Anne helps me get up and dressed in the morning and she’s always happy and smiling even when I’m tired and grumpy! Then she prepares meals for me so that I can just heat them up in the microwave; it’s really convenient for me as I can’t cook because getting around the kitchen is hard.”
Paul says that he wouldn’t be able to stay living in his own home without the help of Enliven.
“I’d be lost without Anne, she has been visiting me for the last 14 years and we get on very well. She is a very nice person – she’s always willing to help me with things.”
