Making Aotearoa New Zealand
the best place to raise children
in flourishing families
Family Works has stepped in to support isolated parents in the, predominantly rural, south Wairarapa.
Thanks to seed funding from the Tindall Foundation, Family Works has established ‘Turret Tots’ a weekly support network for parents and caregivers.
Regional manager Nici Nixon explains the group has been established in response to a need identified in the local community.
“The south Wairarapa is a rural community; there are many parents and carers who are at home with their children and feel really isolated from their support networks and family. For many of them their means of travel is limited and they have only their young children for company. It’s even harder for people who have recently moved to the area.”
Nici says Turret Tots is based at the Featherston Family Works centre, Turret House, and gives parents and caregivers the opportunity to become more connected with their local community.
“The adults and children both enjoy the company of others in a similar situation. Parents realise that they’re not alone. Plus, we can offer advice and support in cases where parents are facing difficult times.”
Family Works Wairarapa also offers a variety of parent education programmes, such as Growing Together, Incredible Years and Good Fathers. The group programmes, which are more formal than Turret Tots, cover topics such as understanding children’s development, communication skills and developing strategies for managing challenging behaviours.
Family Works offers parenting education and support in Taranaki, Whanganui, Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa. In most cases the programmes are provided at a very low cost or even free of charge, however this is only made possible with the support and generosity of our communities.
