Life changing support for Kapiti couple
Bob and Lynaire Walls says Enliven’s support has been life changing
Bob and Lynaire Walls says Enliven’s support has been life changing

When Paraparaumu retiree Bob Walls was diagnosed with Parkinsons disease in 2004, he was reluctant to accept additional day-to-day support. But today he says Enliven’s Kapiti Day Programme has changed his life.

Bob explains that when he was diagnosed he thought by accepting support he would loose his independence, but found the opposite to be true. “Over the years we’ve learned that the more help you get, the longer you can maintain your independence for!” says Bob who, along with his wife of 55 years, Lynaire, are now firm believers in using the support available.

Bob has been visiting Enliven’s Kapiti Day Programme for the last two years and says that life would be very different without it. “I go to Kapiti Cottage two days a week. It gives me a chance to get out and about, but most importantly – it’s a chance for Lynaire to do the same. She is still very active in the community and is such a sociable person that she needs to get out and about and not be stuck in the house with me all day!”

Attendees at the Kapiti Day Programme enjoy a variety of fun activities including indoor golf, lawn bowls, puzzles and quizzes. “It’s a good way for me to keep active even though I’m not very mobile anymore.”

Bob goes on to explain that he’s also made some great new friends through attending the programme. “I pride myself on being one of the leaders – making conversation and being friendly. We have a laugh and I get on well with the blokes that I have met there. I also enjoy chatting with the staff and try and make them laugh at least once each time I go!”

Lynaire explains that Enliven’s day programme has really changed life for the better in the Walls household. “Bob’s health has deteriorated a lot over the years, but with extra help we’re able to stay living at home and despite his illness we still have a full and enjoyable life.

“Having two days a week where we both go off and do our own thing is fantastic and gives me a break and a chance to enjoy myself,” says Lynaire. “The support from Enliven means that we can stay happy together in our marriage and make the best of the situation we are in.”
