Mayor for a minute

Mayor for a minute

Residents from Levin’s Reevedon Home and Village recently found out what it was like to be the Mayor for a day.

The Reevedon Men’s Group had a private tour of Horowhenua District Council with Horowhenua Mayor Brendan Duffy last month.

“The Mayor himself took us on a tour around the building and took us to the Council chambers and asked the men what they would do if they were the Mayor for the day,” explains recreation officer Davina Rawiri.

“They had a few ideas, including improving the footpaths, power stations for mobility scooters, shorter hospital waiting lists and putting a road crossing outside Reevedon Home, as well as a few silly suggestions which were a bit of a laugh.”

The residents also had a chance to put on the Mayoral chains.

“They got to be the Mayor for a minute. It was a really neat experience. Not everyone gets a chance to wear the chains, so it was very special.”

Davina says they decided to visit the Horowhenua District Council as part of Reevedon’s commitment to being involved in the local community.

“It’s about learning about our local community, both its history and its future, and being involved,” says Davina.

“Many of the residents from Reevedon Home and Village have moved here to be closer to family, not all of them grew up here, so for them it’s very much about getting to know their community better.”

Reevedon’s model of care, the Eden Alternative, recognises the importance of companionship and connectivity, which Davina says the Men’s Group helps to cater to.

“The Men’s Group has become very popular since we started it last year. The residents have formed strong friendships, done things they have never done before, visited lots of community groups and attractions and had loads of fun.”

Reevedon’s Men’s Group is looking for male hobby and interest groups in Horowhenua that are willing to share their projects and interests with the men.
