Enliven has been enhancing the lives of older Kapiti Coast residents for more than 20 years.

On Thursday 26 March Enliven is opening the doors to its Kapiti Cottage site in Paraparaumu. The site is the key location for its day activity programme which provides respite, companionship and stimulating activity for up to 36 elders every day.

Manager Dorothy Todd says the programme gives attendees the chance to get out of the house for a while and enjoy socialising with others at a similar stage in life, while their caregivers take a break.

“Our aim is to keep people active and trying new things, to provide companionship, and to give carers a rest,” Dorothy explains.

“Caring is a full time job for partners or family, so it means they can have a break and have some time for themselves.”

Not only does Enliven’s day activity programme provide respite, Dorothy says it also helps to combat social isolation among elders.

“People can become isolated for a number of reasons. Their friends or family may have passed away, their health might make them more reclusive, or their memory or mobility might not be what it used to be.”

For whatever reason, the day activity programme at Enliven’s Kapiti Cottage means attendees are surrounded by like-minded people while they take part in engaging and fun activities.

Dorothy says the day programme’s activities vary depending on what the attendees would like to do, with popular activities including games, high tea, themed parties, gentle exercise classes, art and craft, shared meals and more.

“The friendships people make here is what makes it so enjoyable for them. We’re like a big family where everyone feels a sense of belonging.”

For Kapiti Cottage attendee Jack De Bruin, coming to the day activity programme in Paraparaumu gives his daughter respite while he socialises with his friends.

“I’ve been coming for a couple of years – you get to know the people that come here. It’s good company and it’s something different.”

The Kapiti Cottage Open Day will be held on Thursday 26 March from 1.30pm to 4pm. All are welcome to attend. To find out more about Enliven’s day activity programme at kapiti Cottage, located at 14 Tongariro Street in Paraparaumu, call 04 298 8060, or click here.
