Levin retiree Ina May wasn’t sure what to expect when she was booked in to spend 10 days at Levin Home for War Veterans for respite care.

But by the time she left she knew it was a place she wouldn’t mind calling home.
“I live in Levin with my daughter and my son in law, and my daughter needed to go away for 10 days,” Ina explains.
“It’s the first time I’ve done respite, so before I went I reminded myself that no matter what it’s like it’s only for 10 days.”
But Ina was pleasantly surprised by how “at home” she felt at Levin Home for War Veterans.
“It has been wonderful. It’s like a little holiday. I’ve found the staff to be very good – they are all kind and helpful. Everybody is friendly here. It’s different from a hospital,” says Ina.
“I met some really nice people. There are lots of activities on and the food is fantastic.”
Ina says anyone looking at respite or residential care options should pay Enliven’s Levin Home for War Veterans a visit.
“This is definitely a place I could live. I would recommend for anyone looking for respite care to come here. It’s a very good place.”
Enliven regional manager Kevin Petersen says respite provides the rest and recovery caregivers need to refresh themselves so they can continue providing the best possible care.
“While we want to care for our loved ones, it can be very demanding and tiring work. Respite allows caregivers to have a break and focus on their own wellbeing,” Kevin explains.
He says respite is not only beneficial for the carer, but for the elder too.
“Not only does it give them a chance to experience what it’s like to live in residential care facility, they usually make new friends, pick up new hobbies and often they can’t wait to return again!”
