Although families can take great joy in caring for their loved ones so they can remain at home, the physical and emotional consequences for the family caregiver can be overwhelming without some support, such as respite.

Anneke Barkwith, clinical manager at Enliven’s Woburn Home in Lower Hutt, says respite provides the rest, recovery and space caregivers need to refresh themselves so they can continue providing the best possible care.

“Caring for someone can be very rewarding, but it can also be very demanding and tiring work, both physically and emotionally. Respite allows caregivers to have a break and focus on their own wellbeing,” Anneke explains.

Respite care is short term care offered by Enliven with two main aims; carer relief and socialisation.

“Caring is a full time job for partners or family, so it means they can have a break. They can still continue with their own lives while having peace of mind that their loved one is receiving the best quality care.”

In Wellington Enliven provides respite care at Woburn Home in Lower Hutt, Cashmere and Cashmere Heights Home in Johnsonville, Huntleigh Home in Karori and Kilmarnock Heights Home in Berhampore.

For people who need extra help at home, Enliven can provide an in-home support and personal care service.
