We believe everybody
deserves to enjoy life,
whatever their age
When some people think of rest home life they may imagine it as being rather uneventful. But Kowhainui Home resident Gwen Rod says this couldn’t be further from the truth.
“It’s so different to what I thought it would be. There’s so much laughter. We thoroughly enjoy ourselves here,” Gwen explains.
“I fit in right from the start. They make you feel so welcome here. They meet you with a lovely smile and you become one of the family.”
Gwen was first introduced to Enliven’s Kowhainui Home on St Johns Hill when she started attending the day programme there – a specialised programme for local elders living in their own homes or with family.
“I was living in a beautiful house in Gonville and I used to come here for their day programme and I really enjoyed it.”
She says if it wasn’t for attending the day programme at Kowhainui Home she wouldn’t have known how lively a rest home could be.
“This place felt like home and I said to myself that I wanted to live here if I ever needed full time care.”
When the time came when Gwen couldn’t manage at home anymore she knew where she wanted to call home.
“I couldn’t push Kowhainui out of my mind. I told my kids that I’m going into a home and they can look after the house.”
Gwen says she moved to Kowhainui Home without hesitation and she’s been happy with her choice ever since.
“I call Kowhainui my home now. I don’t even miss my old home, I’m so happy here.”
Kowhainui Home is operated by Enliven, part of the not-for-profit organisation Presbyterian Support Central. The lively home offers rest home and hospital care, as well as short-term respite and an engaging day activity programme for people living in their own homes.
